Michel Wensing is senior lecturer and co-ordinator of research on quality of primary care in the Centre for Quality of Care Research (WOK). Primary care is one of the three sections of the centre, which is a collaboration of the Universities of Nijmegen and Maastricht (www.wokresearch.nl). After initial training as medical sociologist and research methodologist, and Ph.D. in 1997, he developed his main focus in quality improvement and implementation of evidence in patient care. His projects seek to integrate a primary care perspective and relevance to health care policies with the use of up-to-date research methods and theory on change. The studies focused on various clinical conditions, including low back pain, alcohol use, hearing loss, dyspepsia, micturation problems, etc.. Specific interests are patient involvement and (more recently) changes in the organisation of patient care. Michel Wensing co-ordinated over 15 studies, including two international projects (Europep and Improve) and 10 ongoing Ph.D. projects, resulting in four Ph.D. theses so far. He is increasingly involved in education and published over 50 scientific papers. He is (with Richard Grol and Martin Eccles) editor of an English handbook on implementation of innovations in patient care, that will be published in 2004.
